The Mars Society is pleased to welcome acclaimed science fiction author, scientist, and futurist Dr. David Brin as the next guest on Red Planet Live, hosted by Ashton Zeth, on Tuesday, October 13 at 6:00 PM PT.

Brin is a New York Times bestselling author whose novels have earned multiple Hugo, Nebula, and other major awards and have been translated into more than 20 languages. His best-known works include the acclaimed Uplift series, Earth, Existence, and The Postman, which was adapted into a major motion picture directed by and starring Kevin Costner. His nonfiction work The Transparent Society, examining privacy, accountability, and technology, received the American Library Association’s Freedom of Speech Award.
But Brin’s background goes well beyond science fiction. He earned his undergraduate degree in astrophysics from Caltech, followed by a master’s in optics and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, San Diego. His scientific work has encompassed astronomy, astronautics, optics, comets, SETI, and space exploration, and he has held research positions with the California Space Institute and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Brin also spent 15 years on the external advisory council for NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program, which supports potentially groundbreaking concepts for future space exploration. He has advised organizations on subjects ranging from astronomy, space exploration, and SETI to emerging technologies, national security, and the future of civilization.
His newest book, published in 2026, Ailien Minds: Advice About (and For) Our Natural, AI, and Hybrid Heirs, explores the opportunities and potentially profound challenges posed by artificial intelligence and the emergence of new kinds of minds.
During his conversation with Ashton, Brin will bring his unusual combination of scientific expertise and imagination to a wide-ranging discussion about Mars, space exploration, extraterrestrial intelligence, emerging technology, and humanity’s future as a spacefaring civilization.
