Mars Society Seeks Applicants for MDRS Management & Operations

The Mars Society is seeking applications from highly qualified individuals to help with the management and operation of the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah, the largest and longest-running Mars analog facility in the world. Set amid some of the most spectacular landscapes you will ever see, MDRS attracts researchers from across the globe to carry out Mars-related field studies.

The organization is looking for people able to begin working at the facility in the coming months. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. and possess a high level of written and spoken English fluency. This is an in-person role, and we are seeking individuals who can commit to six months of work each year, although shorter three-month terms may be considered. Assignments generally follow the academic quarter.

MDRS is a remote research station, located eight miles from the small town of Hanksville, Utah, which has very limited services. Life on site can be both physically and mentally demanding, sometimes requiring staff to work independently and wear many hats. The environment can be isolating, so it’s important that applicants understand this lifestyle and are confident it suits them. Flexibility, initiative, and a positive outlook are essential.

Successful applicants will bring:

  • A passion for space and the goal of sending humans to Mars
  • A college degree, preferably in science or engineering
  • Experience in remote fieldwork or living in isolated conditions
  • Background in teaching or training groups
  • Skills in facility maintenance or a willingness to learn “hands-on” tasks
  • Experience in analog astronautics, greenhouse operations, or astronomy (a plus)

While challenging, this opportunity is highly rewarding. Housing and utilities are provided on site, along with the chance to live and work under some of the most magnificent night skies on Earth.
