Marspapers Help

by Frank Crossman last modified 2008-08-28 15:44

A quick guide to finding what you want in Marspapers, the Mars Society's collection of papers from our proceedings, and other Mars related documents. We provide our publication policy as well.

Searching

When you enter Marspapers for the first time, you will find a search form below the featured paper (that search form will also be at the bottom of every page while in the Marspapers library).

You will find that you can filter the list of publications that you can see by choosing

  • a specific author or authors,
  • specific words that appear in the title or in the abstract or
  • specific words that appear anywhere including the full text of the paper.

To make the search for papers of similar subject matter easier, Mars papers and abstracts have been assigned to a primary keyword category and given a publication type. You can also select Publication type(s) and keyword(s) assigned to the papers to further restrict the filtered list.

Other notes:
  • A right click on a two button mouse or command-click with a one button mouse allows you to select more that one keyword or to deselect a keyword.
  • The contents of this library will also be returned from the general site search queries (search field near the top of every page and the advanced search form), but the general search does not have authors or publication type fields to search on.

A link to a full listing of all Marspapers or the current search results sorted by keyword, year, author as pdf file is provided at the top of the search form.

Policies

The Mars Society accepts for posting in its Marspapers library any formally presented paper that meets the requirements of the authors' instructions formatting and the copyright license agreement and which bears a relationship to the purposes of the Mars Society, the founding declaration of the Mars Society, or to Mars in general.

In the spirit of openness to the expression of all ideas that cut across a wide range of topics and expertise, the papers presented at Mars Society Conventions which are submitted formally for publication by the Mars Society and in Marspapers are not peer reviewed, although specific abstracts and papers may be deemed unacceptable if they are considered to be  primarily unsubstantiated opinion or a tirade or if they are deemed socially or politically offending in some way. Peer reviewed papers from other organizations and journals are encouraged for posting in Marspapers if the author has retained copyright and will give the Mars Society permission to post the paper. The Mars Society also encourages the submission of responses to posted papers or preprints of papers prepared independently, subject to the guidelines discussed above.

Our policy is to make the full content of the Marspapers Library viewable by Mars Society members only, as a member benefit. Our digital library system may store other references that are not part of Marspapers, either fully viewable by all visitors or by Mars Society members only. The full text of all papers is always searchable using our search engine.

The authors' instructions are posted here.

The permission to publish copyright license is posted here.
