What do all these little icons mean?

Pictorial glossary of the icons used in this site.

Document actions


  • (mail to): Prepares an email with the default mail service on your computer to send a link to the content you are looking at to someone else.
  • (print): Shortcut to the print command of your browser. Note that in this site, only the actual content you are looking at (news item, event, etc.) will be printed, not the site header, footer, or left and right columns.
  • (add to favorites): If you are a paid member, you can organize favorite content in this web site. Links will be stored in a favorites folder in your personal folder, and will appear in a portlet in the left column.
  • (full screen mode): This control lets you hide the left and right columns and header to make it easier to read content on small screens. Click again to recover the hidden parts.

Content types


  • (news item): A news article. Published news articles show up in the news portlet on the right side and in the News tab.
  • (event): Indicates an event announcement or a link to one. If next to a set of date fields, clicking it will bring up a javascript date picker if your browser supports it.
  • (document): A generic web page.
  • (link): A link allows you to provide an external URL with a comment and associating metadata such as keywords (so that the link can be returned by searches, etc.).

Other


  • (member): Indicates a member of the site. Clinking on the icon or the associated link will bring you to the member's home page, unless he made it private.
  • ( group): Members can belong to one or more groups and inherit the groups roles (either site-wide or in a subfolder).
  • (a group workspace): Every group as a workspace which is a special folder into which the group can store their content.
  • (required): Form fields marked with this icon are required. The form will return an error if you do not fill those in.
  • (external link): Hyperlinks that are preceded by this symbol go outside of this web site. Links that do not have this icon are internal to this site. Links marked with this icon will open in a new window.
  • (for site members only): Content with this flag is not available to anonymous visitor. Only people with a web site account can see it.
  • (for Mars Soceity members only): Content with this flag is visible to Mars Society members only.
