Image of the day: Mars (Not by Andy Warhol)
A four-color collage shows a cloudy Mars imaged by the European Mars Express.
The Mars Express probe took the images with a low-tech camera designed solely to
confirm
that its Beagle lander had separated from the mothership. The Beagle ended up
crashing into
a crater near its planned landing site, but the visual monitoring camera has
continued to
work and now provides low-res "webcam" images that take frequent snapshots of
Mars. Bill
Dunford from Utah created the collage by using GIMP image processing software to
color the
four images, ending up with a Warhol-esque montage.
Mars Express recently got a close look at the Martian moon Phobos, and has a
final flyby set
for August 3.
