Announcing the 2010 University Rover Challenge

by Kevin F Sloan last modified 2009-09-09 22:06 — expired

Calling all students: are you up for the challenge? The Mars Society's Fourth Annual University Rover Challenge (URC) is seeking the best and brightest college teams to design and build the next generation of Mars rovers for a competition at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in southern Utah. The international competition will be held June 3-5, 2010; thousands in prize money, and a year's worth of bragging rights, are up for grabs.

At the 2009 URC, York University pulled ahead quickly with a commanding lead and never looked back on their way to taking home the title of URC Champion. In 2010, York will look to defend their title against an ever-growing, tough, international field. The University Rover Challenge is gaining visibility worldwide as a premier event for the best engineering and science talent entering the space workforce.

The 2010 URC rules are now available online. Teams and their rovers will compete in four events:

  • Equipment Servicing Task: A new task for 2010, teams will tele-operate their rovers to perform numerous dexterous operations to service an equipment panel
  • Site Survey Task: Rovers will search for, and survey the coordinates of, several remote markers in the field
  • Emergency Navigation Task: Rovers will race against the clock in search of a distressed astronaut who is lost and disabled in the field
  • Sample Return Task: Also new for 2010, rovers will search in the field for evidence of extremophiles, and will have to take and return a sample.

The Indication of Participation deadline is February 1, 2010. Former students and community members alike are encouraged to reach out to their alma matters and local universities to help form teams. Don't let your school go unrepresented at the 2010 University Rover Challenge!

Interested student teams should contact the URC Director, Kevin Sloan. More information is also available on the URC home page.

When pulling it back up, the rope broke. They couldn`t see it at first so they went back to quad and then collected all the parts of the broken CRV. Then they learned what happened.
