Discovery Channel's "Daily Planet" Highlights University Rover Challenge

by Alex Kirk last modified 2007-09-24 14:36

Yesterday the Discovery Channel Canada's flagship science program, "Daily Planet", ran a prominent feature on the 2007 University Rover Challenge as part of a program focusing on Mars exploration, which led into its much-hyped "Race For Mars" four-part miniseries.

According to Mars Society Canada member Hugh Gregory, one of the judges at the 2007 URC, "They showed the tenacity of Brigham Young University's rover to conquer Flag Hill, the determination of UCLA to get their rover operational and the University of Nevada Reno's refusal to give up after their rover shorted out not once, not twice, but three times.

"Special attention was given to the science package on the Reno rover and the advanced stereo vision system on BYU's rover. All of the exteriors were shot with a red filter to make the whole report look Mars like and the report concluded with John, Heather, Hugh, Paul and Kevin standing on the MDRS HAB steps as Kevin pronounced the judges decision and announced that Reno was the winner of the 2007 URC."

The first two parts of the Race to Mars miniseries aired immediately after the Daily Planet episode. For those viewers in Canada, the last two parts of the series will air on Sunday, September 30, from 8 - 10 p.m. Eastern or 9 - 11 p.m. Pacific. Additionally, the Discovery Channel will follow up the Race to Mars with another miniseries titled Mars Rising, with the following episodes:

  • #1 Journey to the Red Planet - Oct. 7th
  • #2 Rocket Power - Oct. 7th
  • #3 Staying Alive - Oct. 14th
  • #4 The Human Factor - Oct. 21st
  • #5 Six Minutes of Terror - Oct. 28th
  • #6 Search for Life - Nov. 4th
