Buzz Aldrin

Dr. Buzz Aldrin is one of the first two humans to have walked on the Moon. Since retiring from NASA, the Air Force, and his position as Commander of the Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, Dr. Aldrin has remained at the forefront of efforts to ensure a continued leading role for America in manned space exploration. Penny Boston

My areas of research include cave geomicrobiology, microbial life in highly mineralized environments, unique or characteristic biominerals and biosignature detection. Additionally, I am involved in astrobiology and the search for life beyond Earth. Cave formation mechanisms on other planetary bodies is a topic of particular interest to me. My background includes geology, microbiology, atmospheric chemistry, global biogeochemical cycling, and climate/life interactions. I am passionate about and extensively involved in educational outreach about caves and karst issues, space exploration, and general science for school kids, older students, elder groups, and the general public.

Chris Carberry

Location: Massachusetts
Chris Carberry is the Executive Director of The Mars Society. Prior to taking on that position Chris was actively involved in the space exploration advocacy community as a volunteer, serving on the Steering Committees for the Mars Society (where he served as chairman) and the Space Exploration Alliance (SEA) as well as having served the Board of Directors for the National Space Society. For several years, he served as the national political director for the Mars Society, for which he has organized congressional outreach efforts around the country; he has spoken to most major presidential candidate during the last several elections. He co-authored space language in the 2000 Republican National Platform, has co-authored Congressional testimony, and has met with high level officials at the White House, NASA and Congress. He was chairman of such congressional lobbying events as the 2007 Space Budget Blitz, the 2007 Moon-Mars Blitz, the 2006 Space Blitz, and the Great 2006 Mars Blitz. Chris has been quoted in numerous newspapers and magazines, including USA Today, The Boston Herald, The Hartford Courant, The New Scientist, Metro (of London) and stories have been written about him in several publications including the Wired News (picked up by ABC NEWS), Salem News and the Eagle-Tribune. He has provided commentary on various television stations including CNN International, and has appeared as a guest The Space Show and on the Paul Sullivan Show on WBZ radio in Boston. He is also the author of numerous articles and Op Ed pieces concerning space policy and politics appearing in such publications Space News, The Space Review, and The Boston Herald. Chris is the author of a mystery/science fiction novel called Celestial Pursuits: in the hub of the universe which was published in 2006. He is currently working on several writing projects, including another science fiction novel as well as a non-fiction book concerning art theft. In addition, Chris has recently signed a movie option contract for his novel, Celestial Pursuits, with a Los Angeles production company. Chris Carberry has a Bachelor’s degree in political science and a Master’s degree in history and archival methods. For several years Chris worked as an archivist at the Massachusetts Historical Society, where he processed the papers of United States Senator Leverett Saltonstall, as well as numerous other collections. While in this position, he compiled The Guide to Modern Political Papers in Massachusetts and helped to put together numerous displays. Chris transitioned into the role of Operations Manager at the Historical Society, where he is responsible for the protection of numerous art works and the greatest collection of early American documents outside of the Library of Congress. Chris has a heavy background in historical research, having worked as research assistant for several authors, including British biographer Sarah Bradford (America’s Queen) and former New York Times Magazine editor Ed Klein (The Kennedy Curse). In 2007, Chris was contracted to archive a large collection of political correspondence and documents and to write a biography on Boston businessman John W Humphrey.

Jonathan Clarke

Dr. Jonathan Clarke is Director of Field Research with Mars Society Australia. A Canberra-based geologist with experience in the mineral and petroleum industry, academia, and in government surveys, Jonathan now works for Geoscience Australia. He has worked in every state of Australia, mostly in the arid interior. In addition he has practiced geology in New Zealand, the Philippines, and the Atacama desert of northern Chile, one of the most Mars-like areas on earth. Dr Clarke led the Jarntimarra-1 expedition, and took part in Expedition One in Utah, U.S.A, in 2003 and Expedition Two in Arkaroola in 2004.

Patricia Czarnik

Location: Wyoming, USA
Member of Steering Committee, Director of Membership, Administrative Director of Political Task Force. I am currently a member of the Wyoming Chapter but have been a member of the Ohio and Texas Chapters in the past.

Tamarack Robert Czarnik

Location: Wyoming
Medical Director for the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS). Initially trained as a family practitioner at Ohio State University, Tam Czarnik traveled the world between locum tenens (temporary) physician assignments before returning to the United States to attend Wright State University's Aerospace Medicine Program. There he learned not only about the physiological effects of high-altitude travel upon the human body, but also the importance of continuing to research the probable impact of differing environments on potential outer-space explorers.

Gary Fisher

Location: Pennsylvania
Gary Fisher is involved in Greenhouse research at the Mars Desert Research Station, spacesuit and other technological research, and has been helping with fundraising.

Gus Frederick

Location: Silverton, OR COTU — Main Language: en
Oregon Native Gus Frederick is an instructional technologist, graphic artist, technical illustrator, animator and filmmaker. Some of his many hobbies include spending time with his daughter Genevieve, puttering around in the great Oregon outdoors, caving, reading and writing science fiction, listening to and collecting traditional Jazz Records created using analog means at 78 rpm. He is also very involved with his community of Silverton, and is active with Mars Advocacy, serving on the Mars Society's Steering Committee. He is also dedicated to working towards energy independence, promoting a peaceful world, reducing the influence of the Military Industrial Complex, and is active in his community with the Silverton People for Peace, Silverton Grange and serves on the Board of Directors for the Oregon Chapter of the Fellowship of Reconciliation.

James Harris

Location: Austin, TX
Coordinator Mars Society Engineering Team, and member of the Mars Society Steering Committee; veteran MDRS Crews 22, 34, and 58, along with several refit, inventory, and survey trips to MDRS; Chief Engineer FMARS 2007 and holds the personal record for longest time spent in the FMARS habitat; original Webdude for the Political Task Force.

Richard Heidmann

Location: PARIS FRANCE — Main Language: fr
Richard Heidmann, a space propulsion engineer, was involved in the genesis and the development of the European Ariane rocket launchers. He has taken an active role in promoting Mars exploration, as a founding member of The Mars Society and as the head of its French chapter, Association Planète Mars. He is the author of “Planète Mars, une attraction irresistible” (ALVIK, Paris, 2005), a book about the motivations for Mars exploration (in French).

Rt. Rev. James Heiser

Location: Texas
The Right Rev. James Heiser was ordained into the ministry in 1996 and has served in central Texas since 1998. In 2006 he was called to serve as Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of North America. His other responsibilities include holding the office of President of the Center for the Study of Lutheran Orthodoxy and Dean of Missions of The Augustana Ministerium. A founding member of the Mars Society, Bishop Heiser has presented essays to seven conventions of that society.

Darlene S.S. Lim

Location: NASA Ames
Darlene is a geobiologist and limnologist (and yes, her last name is Lim) based at the NASA Ames Research Center. Her research interests span Earth and Space Science. Since 1999, she has been participating in the NASA/SETI Haughton Mars Project, and was selected to inhabit the Mars Society's Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station (FMARS), the world's first Mars simulation base, at Haughton Crater in 2000 and 2001. Over the past decade, Darlene conducted fieldwork in the Canadian High Arctic, the Antarctic, throughout Central America, Guyana, U.S., Canada, and Chile. She continues to ardently promote the importance of science and exploration through lectures, media outreach and editorial contributions.

Bruce Mackenzie

Location: Massachusetts
Bruce Mackenzie is a member of the Mars Society Steering Committee. He is a co-founder of the Mars Homestead Project, to start the settlement of space with a Mars base built from local materials. He originated the concept for brick masonry structures for Mars featured as ‘Underhill” in “Red Mars” by Kim Stanley Robinson. He has also worked on orbital transport using tethers - leading to space manufacturing. As a staff member at Draper Lab, he worked on launcher guidance and GPS receivers. Bruce became active in NSS through the Boston L5 Society. He is also involved with the NSS, SSI, Planetary Society, ISU and MIT - SEDS.

Bo Maxwell

Location: United Kingdom
Managing Director of The Mars Society UK Ltd since its formation in July 1998. Works as an independent IT consultant specialising in Data Centre Management, Disaster Recovery and IT Service Management. A former fellow of the British Interplanetary Society, he has been lecturing in space exploration for over 20 years, and is a regular commentator on space and Mars exploration with the BBC. Alongside his work for the MS-UK, he co-manages the Euro-MARS project. He was also a member of the original MDRS Shakedown crew in January 2002

Steve McDaniel

I am an attorney with scientific training, having a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. I have logged two rotations in at the Mars Desert Research Station, and one in at the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station.

Guy Murphy

Location: Australia
Guy Murphy, past President and now Director of Mars Society Australia and a member of the Mars Society's International Steering Committee, has a Bachelor of Arts (economic history) and a Graduate Diploma (architectural history & conservation) from the University of Melbourne. Guy works as a heritage consultant in Melbourne, researching and documenting historic buildings, and his interests include space architecture, crew psychology and parallels between Australian history and contemporary space exploration.

Anthony Curtis Muscatello

Location: Florida, USA — Main Language: en
Dr. Tony Muscatello has over 30 years experience in advanced chemical research, most recently in ISRU (In Situ Resource Utilization) for Mars exploration. He is a former Los Alamos National Laboratory staff member and worked for Rockwell International before that. At Pioneer Astronautics, Tony served as member of teams working on the Mars Methanol In-Situ Propellant Production (MMISPP), Mars Aromatics, Hydrocarbon, and Olefin Synthesis System (MAHOSS), Nitrous Oxide Based Oxygen Supply System (NOBOSS), and the Carbon Monoxide Metal Oxide Reduction System (COMORS) (oxygen extraction from lunar and martian regolith) research projects. He was Principle Investigator on the NASA Phase II SBIR Methane to Aromatics on Mars (METAMARS) project. Tony joined NASA in the fall of 2007 and is continuing his work in ISRU in the RESOLVE project which is designed to locate water on the Moon. Tony is a founding member of the Mars Society, a member of the Steering Committee, and coordinated Mars Analog research Mission Support from 2000 to 2007.

Declan O'Donnell

Mr. O’Donnell is a trial attorney in the Denver, Colorado metropolitan area with a national constituency in the areas of tax and securities litigation and a growing practice base in space law. He has over 50 publications on space law and space policy

Gabriel Rshaid

Location: Argentina
Headmaster of St Andrew's Scots School , Buenos Aires , worked for 17 years as a teacher and Head in various bilingual schools in Buenos Aires . Parallel to his career as an educator, he worked extensively in the development of educational technology projects, mostly related to Space Education with a special focus on the design and implementation of online spaceflight simulations. He is married, has two children and a keen interest in sports and chess.

Shannon M. Rupert

Location: San Diego, CA
Shannon Rupert Robles is a plant ecologist from San Diego, California. She has an M.S. in Biological Sciences from California State University San Marcos, a B.S. in Ecology, Behavior and Evolution from the University of California San Diego and an A.S. in Biology from Miramar College, where she currently teaches non-majors biology. Her research interests include the evolution of plant breeding systems, ecological processes at Mars analog sites and exploring how Earth/Mars scientists communicate and collaborate. In addition, she is the MDRS Remote Science Team Coordinator and the NASA Mobile Agents Remote Science Team Lead.

Gus Scheerbaum

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Gus Scheerbaum is a Civil Engineer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After graduation from the Pennsylvania State University with bachelor’s degrees in Civil Engineering and German, he has worked in private consulting for the last twelve years. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania and Delaware and currently works as principal engineer and project manager in Center-City Philadelphia. Gus is also serving a three-year term as a public appointee to the Transportation Advisory Committee for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Gus has followed his life-long interest in Mars in a number of ways. He is interested in In-Situ-Resource-Utilization with applications for construction material manufacture. He is also a politically active humans-to-Mars advocate. Gus is an avid environmentalist and takes strong interest in public transit issues, smart urban development planning, and open-space preservation. He has successfully combined his advocacy and technical interests into a personal mission.

Frank Schubert

Location: Denver, CO
A musician and architect, Frank Schubert was a former member of iconic band Devo. Currently residing an Denver, Colorado, Frank was responsible for the final design and build-out of the Mars Society's Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station and Mars Desert Research Station. He provided invaluable engineering guidance on the design of the European Unit.

Kevin F Sloan

Location: Washington, DC
Kevin Sloan, a systems engineer in the Wasington, DC area, serves as the Director of PR & Marketing for the Mars Society, and is also the Director of the University Rover Challenge

Peter Smith

Location: University of Arizona
Senior Research Scientist at the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory in Tucson. Project Manager and co-Principal Investigator of the HiRISE high resolution telescope that is now orbiting Mars and sending back the detailed pictures of Mars recently in the news. He is also the Principal Investigator for the Phoenix Mars Mission to launch in 2007.

Lucinda Weisbach

Location: San Jose, CA — Main Language: en
Lucinda Weisbach is a life-time member of the Mars Society and someone who has been familiar with Dr. Zubrin's Mars Direct plan since NASA's adoption in 1989. She began her activist role on the Political Task Force raising awareness within the organization. As a member of the political web team and a regional coordinator for the east coast, she directly aids members to write and meet with their local representatives.

Artemis Westenberg

Trained as manager in many fields ( e.g. financial, project, logistics, PR), her work experience is divers: working for various multinational corporations as PR manager and Business Administration manager; president of the Rotterdam Women's Council, the largest pressure group organisation of the Netherlands; lobbyist for many very diverse projects. Artemis has served on 5 MDRS crews. She is CapCom for MDRS and FMARS. She has been a board member of the Mars Society Netherlands from the very first, and has organised many Mars Society conferences. Robert Zubrin

Location: Boulder, CO
Robert Zubrin is the founder and President of the Mars Society. He is also President of Pioneer Astronautics, an aerospace R&D company located in Lakewood, Colorado. Formerly a Staff Engineer at Lockheed Martin Astronautics in Denver, he holds a Masters degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Washington.
