Field Work

The 17-mile-high summit of Olympus Mons rises above most of the tenuous Martian atmosphere. The volcano's 40-mile-diameter caldera is larger than most volcanoes on Earth. It covers more land area than all of the Hawaiian Islands combined. In the future, humans might have an opportunity to explore this wonder firsthand.
