Last Chance for 6,000 Klicks

by Jean Lagarde last modified 2007-02-09 18:28

A plant extracts water from the surface of Phobos using a nuclear-powered rock-melting device. Contaminates in the water vapor are removed in chemical process units located on a boom 50 meters above the rock-melter. Aided by the low surface gravity of Phobos, the whole process plant moves on legs equipped with end effectors. Cryogenic oxygen/hydrogen could be used as propellant for Mars lander vehicles and for life support.
