The Mars Society will take a first step towards orbit by dropping a prototype of TEMPO³ from a high-altitude balloon.

Today, The Mars Society committed to a test of TEMPO³ in near-space.  A balloon will carry the craft to 100,000 feet or more, then spin it and drop it.  This method will allow us to gain experience with CubeSat components while exercising basic ground operations and returning incredible video of the test.  The exact details still need to be ironed out (fidelity, target launch date, location, etc) but these should follow in the next couple weeks.  Watch this space for more updates.
