One of my goals at the Mars Desert Research Station (February and December 2004) has been to use geophysical methods to learn more about geologic field methods while studying the geology of the Morrison Formation in southern Utah. As a U.S. Geological Survey volunteer working with field crews in southeast Alaska and northern Mexico, I realized that I would learn more when I was on my own, getting hands-on experience and being forced to use my own deductive skills rather than relying on the knowledge of coworkers. My geophysical research at the MDRS and the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station has given me the opportunity to learn fast and apply my knowledge in the field; in addition, it has prompted me to return to school to gain the background knowledge essential to doing better research.
