"Kaseido" - The Martian Way
In: On To Mars 2, edited by Zubrin, RM, and Crossman, F. Collector's Guide Publishing Inc.
Now, when we say "we" we don't just mean a collective we - all of us following an identical policy - whether that policy is drafted by the Mars Society or someone else. Rather, we are referring to a gradual but unstoppable process of empowerment. It's like yeast spreading through a lump of dough and making lots of little bubbles. You come back 2 hours later and there's twice as much dough to see. And no one little bubble did that. We call this process “kaseido.”
Getting to Mars through our own efforts rather than those of government bureaucrats and contractors will teach us that lesson. The Mars Society can be a school for individual achievement and contribution to the Martian enterprise - but only if its members express their own opinions and choose their own projects, without being pushed into conformity of thought or action. We will become the Martians - and by working with commitment and dedication, by practicing kaseido, we’re Making Martians Now.
