The Mars Quarterly (TMQ) Premiere Edition
As we all know, for the past several years, The Mars Society has had few tangible benefits for our many members. However, we intend to rectify this problem. The first step in this process is the creation of a new PDF magazine called The Mars Quarterly. We plan for TMQ to be nexus of discussion for the Mars movement. In addition to Mars Society updates and news, TMQ will have articles and op/eds from some of the most renowned and respected people in the Mars and space community. It will also be a venue to discuss the important policy issues of the day. The premiere "sample" edition has impressive content, with an interview with Mars Phoenix Lander Principal Investigator, Dr. Peter Smith; an article by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Chief Scientist, Dr. James Garvin; an Op/Ed by former astronaut and NASA Associate Administrator, Dr. Scott "Doc" Horowitz; and a passionate message from Mars Society President, Dr. Robert Zubrin.
If possible, The Mars Society hopes to publish at least one print version of this publication a year, but this will all depend on advertising as well as the level of donations we receive.
Although the Society's leadership will investigate additional membership benefits over the upcoming year, as always, the primary goal of our organization is to advance the cause of getting humans to Mars. As such, you can feel confident that the vast majority of your generous donations will be spent on our impressive technical projects and promoting our message to the general public and to governments around the world.
The first edition of TMQ is available here. If you are having any difficulty opening it, please first ensure that you have a current copy of the free Adobe Acrobat PDF reader; any further difficulties should be reported to the webmaster.
HELP SUPPORT THE MARS SOCIETY WITH AN END OF YEAR DONATION
By any measurement, The Mars Society is building momentum. Three amazing Society conventions were held this year in Australia, Colorado, and Belgium reaffirming the international desire to continue to press for humans to Mars. We have also started an ambitious new project, TEMPO^3; we plan to transform some of our other projects; we have unveiled our new publication, The Mars Quarterly, and we have hired an Executive Director. However, WE NEED YOUR HELP! The disturbing economic and political environment could derail our progress and future plans. Your contribution will make a sizable difference.Great Things Can Happen in Hard Times: Even the most optimistic person can be discouraged by the current worldwide economic and political problems. However, the election of Barack Obama has created a feeling of optimism throughout the world. Our optimistic vision fits perfectly with his, and could be vital in creating the type of future he is promoting. No matter how talented the President-elect may be, positive change will require inspirational goals and people of vision. Our vision of humans to Mars is an optimistic one; one that can help lift the societal gloom that has descended upon the planet. When John Quincy Adams said, "Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish," he was absolutely correct. Indeed, patience and perseverance will be an absolute necessity in the next few years. Long-term prosperity depends on people who refuse to let pessimists and hard times drag them down; who dare to achieve greatness when most others surrender. Together we can advance the cause of humans to Mars despite economic and political obstacles.
Help us rise above these difficulties and make these obstacles vanish! Give as generously as you can to The Mars Society.
