The Mars Project Challenge Has Begun!
"It is time to move forward!" That was the unanimous opinion expressed at the recent Mars Society Steering Committee meeting in Austin, Texas. While The Mars Society has engaged in some truly amazing endeavors since its founding in 1998, we need to start a new, more ambitious project. That project will be the Mars Project Challenge (MPC).
The goal of the MPC (http://www.marssociety.org/portal/MPC/)
will be to undertake a project that will provide a REAL contribution to
future human missions to Mars. Whether this involves launching hardware
into space or testing technologies here on Earth, we intend to select a
project that will advance planning for future Mars missions.
The difference between this project and our previous projects is that we want to give our membership a chance to participate in the brainstorming and selection process. Any paid Mars Society member will be able to submit a proposal for consideration in MPC. All those participating will be required to submit their concept on a quad chart and a one page summary. (Sample quad charts and project summaries are posted on the Mars Society website) Each proposal must address a key aspect of humans to Mars exploration and have the potential to stimulate public and media interest.
All proposals will be due by midnight EST on May 25, 2008. Ten finalists will then be selected and announced by the end of June. Finalists will then be voted on by Mars Society members on our webpage and at the Mars Society Convention in Boulder, Colorado from August 14-17, 2008.
When The Mars Society was founded, one of our goals was to build an organization whose membership not only provided the energy and excitement to propel the organization forward, but who just may be able to change the world. We think The Mars Project Challenge has the potential to do just that. "Something bold is needed," Mars Society Political Director, Chris Carberry has stated. "It's time to do a project that will not only help advance technologies necessary for landing humans on Mars, but that will electrify The Mars Society and the space community. We hope to have that project by the Autumn of this year."
