Mars Society Members Will Receive the NSS Member Rate for ISDC; Less Than One Month For MPC Submissions

by Alex Kirk last modified 2008-05-21 01:11 — expired

The Mars Society will be an affiliate of the National Space Society's International Space Development Conference (ISDC), which will be taking place in Washington, D.C. from May 29-June 1, 2008.

With this status, members of The Mars Society will qualify for the National Space Society membership rate for conference registration. NSS has assembled an impressive conference that includes speakers such as Burt Rutan, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Buzz Aldrin, Anousheh Ansari, Elon Musk, and Congressman Nick Lampson. In addition, ISDC will host a wide ranging number of programs that will address such topics as Google Lunar X Prize, Election 2008, a Spaceports Panel, and many other programs. The Mars Society will be well represented at ISDC and we hope to see you there.

Less Than One Month Remains For Mars Project Challenge Submissions

The goal of the MPC (http://www.marssociety.org/portal/MPC/) is to collect ideas from our members for the next Mars Society project that will provide a REAL contribution to future human missions to Mars. Whether this involves launching hardware into space or testing technologies here on Earth, we intend to select a project that will advance planning for future Mars missions.

The difference between this project and our previous projects is that we want to give our membership a chance to participate in the brainstorming and selection process. Any paid Mars Society member will be able to submit a proposal for consideration in MPC. All those participating will be required to submit their concept on a quad chart and a one page summary. (Sample quad charts and project summaries are posted on the Mars Society website) Each proposal must address a key aspect of humans to Mars exploration and have the potential to stimulate public and media interest.

All proposals will be due by midnight EST on May 25, 2008 -- less than one month from today. Ten finalists will then be selected and announced by the end of June. Finalists will then be voted on by Mars Society members on our webpage and at the Mars Society Convention in Boulder, Colorado from August 14-17, 2008.

When The Mars Society was founded, one of our goals was to build an organization whose membership not only provided the energy and excitement to propel the organization forward, but who just may be able to change the world. We think the Mars Project Challenge has the potential to do just that. "Something bold is needed," said Mars Society Executive Director Chris Carberry. "It's time to do a project that will not only help advance technologies necessary for landing humans on Mars, but that will electrify The Mars Society and the space community. We hope to have that project identified by the autumn of this year."
