THE MARS SOCIETY - THIS WEEK IN SAN DIEGO

Sunday, June 22, 2008

TV ALERT: "When We Left Earth" is the story of mankind's greatest adventure, leaving the earth and living in space. For the first time this series has digitally re-mastered the original film and audio recordings from NASA's vault, including and all the key on-board footage filmed by the astronauts themselves. From John Glenn's Mercury mission to orbit the earth, to Neil Armstrong's first historic steps on the moon, to the unprecedented spacewalks required to repair the Hubble telescope, these epic stories are shown in stunning clarity and told by the astronauts and engineers who were there.

In May 1961, President John F. Kennedy spoke the immortal words; "I believe that this nation should commit itself, to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth." These words changed the lives of twelve men who became known as "Moonwalkers." The journey began there and continues on in Jeffrey Roth's remarkable documentary, The Wonder Of It All.

TMS-SD MARS MOVIE NIGHT
"ROCKETSHIP X-M" (1950)

Astronauts blast off to explore the moon. But because of craft malfunction and some strange fuel calculations, they end up landing on the red planet. On Mars, evidence of a once powerful civilization is found. The scientists determined that an atomic war destroyed most of the Martians (who surprisingly look like humans). Those that survived reverted to a caveman-like existence.

Showtime is Saturday at 7:00pm at Studio 106 in the Art Union Building at 2323 Broadway 92102 -- please RSVP to FILMIST[at]MAC.COM. We'll provide the popcorn -- you can bring drinks or snacks to share.
