MDRS Mars Spectacular
Mars Images
Commentary by Peter Detterline

All the Mars images were taken through the Celestron 1400CGE telescope at the Musk Desert Research Observatory using a Planet Cam CCD Video camera. The approximate number of images stacked using Registax is displayed beneith each image.

Above the south polar cap you'll see Mare Erythraeum with the small reddish patch near the ice cap being the impact crater Argyre. The small dark dot to the left is Solis Lacus, and just above that you can see a small dark feature extending out from the Mare - that's part of the "Grand Canyon of Mars" the Valleris Marineris. The light colored area above the Mare is Chryse Planitia whereViking 1 landed. Finally, the dark patch to the right of the Mare is Meridani Sinus.
