Log Book for April 5, 2008
Commander's Report
Boris Yim Reporting

Another movie last night: "GalaxyQuest" which is absolutely funny in
our serious mission. Our bread maker continues to improve the bread we
had at breakfast. Some of us took our professional photographer around
the Hab for photos, while some prepare for an ATV trip to Skyline Rim
where we could not go to last time. Maps and topology is studied but
the GPS device was not ready to show the way points. It was used to
record where we went instead. Our photographer followed us by an ATV
(perhaps he should sign the waiver form, too) to Skyline Rim, all the
way taking quality photos for the world to see. He shot some through a
helmet to get the perspective of another EVA driver. On our way, we
missed a turn and a tire was discovered flatter than normal, so we
headed back to the Hab for a pump. Then, we drove to the Skyline Rim
again, climbed up a hill, collected some samples and came back for
lunch.

Another EVA in the afternoon aimed to collect halophile samples using a
more refined protocol. The photographer followed, too. Other than taking
photos and some video, he recorded the sound during the EVA for slide
show or multimedia purposes, and also interviewed us by voice recording
in a quiet place - the airlock. The weather station problem continued
to be analyzed and we were working to calculate radiation dose from the
data of the radio telescope. The way to import way points into the GPS
device was by converting the gtm file to gpx by GPS TrackMaker on the
silver/gray laptop, then use POI Loader downloaded from Garmin website
to import the points into the Garmin GPS device. Perhaps GPS TrackMaker
can directly import the points, too.

The oil of the generator Wendy was refilled while it was off, but the
power system seems to continue to use battery power when Wendy was back
on, which we did not notice until a blackout occurred during the
communication window which delayed our reports. Our engineers
skillfully debugged and solved the problem. More in the engineering
report.
