Commander's Report
Boris Yim Reporting
Last night was cold. All heaters did not work for unknown reasons. Finally before we slept, the lower floor heating works by some random tweaks and so was the water heating.
This morning we woke up later than yesterday. Perhaps we need more sleep in general. The radio telescope continued to send data that correlates to the rise of Jupiter and the Sun. We expected Don to come in the afternoon, but soon we heard some mysterious knocking sound and see Don arrived. We were tricked by a really bad April Fool's joke and discussed what to do, until we realized that. The engineers received help from Don to troubleshoot the second floor heater, and successfully tested 2 backup generators. Guerric, Elanz and I went to the observatory to replace the string for closing the roof using heat shrink tubes and tapes.
After lunch, 2 EVAs were planned. EVA 1 saw the commander first set foot on Mars, with the words "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." Guerric followed and we went to the engineering area to select a light but stiff bar to reinforce an airplane wing, all the way communicating on radio or speaking directly at close range (Mars has thin air - perhaps shouting is needed). The radio made the conversation harder to hear, too loud, and sometimes producing annoying sounds. The radio button was harder to reach than imagined by gloves. We returned to help Violette and Elnaz in EVA 2 with their ATVs. They traveled far with GPS recording to test the radio range from the Hab, with Jan extending out of the Hab from the roof in an imagined pressurized space. This enhanced the radio range by orders of magnitudes. If the roof antenna could be connected, this would not be needed. EVA 2 experienced the fading of radio performance when they went far enough. We returned a bit hot and sweaty. Another observation is, with some skills, it seems that one can don the EVA suit alone when needed.
The toilet, as usual, did not flush again. Guerric and I went to the GreenHab to jiggle the sensor. Not sure when this trouble and other water pumping can work automatically. We were also unsure when we saw little flow going through the pump to cool it from burning out.
The heating for the upper floor has yet to be fixed. It will require some out of simulation troubleshooting outside the Hab tomorrow.
At least and at last, we have set foot on Mars today, on April Fool's Day.
