Commander's Report 31 March, 2008 Boris Yim
We began our day near 8am. Violette and I drove all the way to Price to change the vehicle to a small and cheap one, and the rest of my crew were given the task of tidying and cleaning the Hab, with the aim of making the Hab safer, more efficient and resourceful. After that, they erected the radio telescope, connected its wires properly, and made it work. Jan hurt his finger when he used a rock to hit rebars into the ground. The water tank in the attic was emptied and the pump was running empty for about 15 minutes till Jan noticed it and switched it off after his shower water stopped. His shower was a cold one since the water did not heat up. The air heating was also reported to be not working. They figured out the way to refill the water tank though.
When we had a full crew again in the afternoon, I signed Jan up for a new Gmail account to avoid the delay problem of his original email account, which caused miscommunication yesterday. Jan and I helped Violette pump the almost-full grey water into the GreenHab. The end of the water tube was displaced slightly when the tube was extended, and the gray water made a small mess on the ATs for several seconds before we quickly disconnected the power cord. As instructed by Elisha in the previous crew, we turned off another 2 pumps for a while after reducing the gray water to a safe level. Jan, Elnaz and Violette were taught how to operate the ATVs and had some practice driving around. Meanwhile, Guerric made us first in getting the signal from the radio telescope by a software, with those weird extraterrestrial noise coming from the speaker. Our crew was very excited to be the first to successful operate the radio telescope, and took photos with it. With the help of Celine, I attempted to fix the Hab front door which now requires jacking up to be fully closed. The loose screws at the hinge and in the door holding the insulator were tightened. A good solution we think is to adjust the wheel at the bottom of the door, which solution requires drilling to enlarge 2 holes in the steel plate. I am asking the ET team for advice and tooling before proceeding. The water tank was emptied again but this time the pumping has a very low flow rate. We are asking for help for all the engineering problems. At present we are feeling cold in the Hab.
