Special Science Report

February 20, 2008

Heather Allaway

Project:
Protection by the Regolith

Personnel:
Heather Allaway (Crew 67)

Operations Data Collected:
One sample collected at 12 S Easting 519151.203 Northing 4250636.178
Altitude 1376.723. Sample was taken from a sand bar at the base of a
dried river bed.

Technical/Equipment Issues:
Soil is very water logged. Small diameter corer was not able to reach
a substantial depth. Temperature, soil moisture, and pH were not taken
due to the shipment not arriving yet (should arrive by the end of the
week).

Discussion:
Sample collected will be attempted to be plated once agar plates are
made. This will be completed once diesel arrives and Wendy is running
again.
Next EVA I will use a different corer. It is a soil auger. It will
take longer to get to 30cm so less sample sites will be taken.

Questions for CSO:
Any input on increasing the possibility of obtaining deep (30+cm)
samples would be appreciated.
