Extremophile Sample Collection

Cupit, Mary Roach
Operations Data Collected:
Three samples were collected from Factory Bench evaporite deposits at
two sites. The first site exhibited a white powder or crust on top of
underlying dark grey sediment. The second site had a small white
powder spot on top of similar grey sediment, while underneath a large
crystal structure penetrated into the sediment. It is our theory that
the loose upper sediment was on top of a less permeable layer and that
water penetrated into the top sediment and then evaporated forming the
large diffuse crystal formations. We suspect they are gypsum
deposits.

Six samples were collected from Candor Chasma evaporite deposits at six
sites. The sites exhibited a white powder or crust on top of
underlying sediment or rock.

Technical/Equipment Issues:
Again had difficulty flaming instruments in wind and non-wind
situations.
Discussion:
We will return to Factory Bench tomorrow to collect further samples.
We may also go to Candor Chasma or Lith Canyon again for more sample
collecting.
