Kerry Cupit Reporting
EVA #3 Report
February 5, 2008
Kerry Cupit
Time:
10:36am to 12:11pm
Crew Members:
Anna Grinberg, Cheryl Ann Wartman and Kerry Cupit
Site Location:
300m from Hab in the direction of Phobos Peak
Transit Mode:
Pedestrian EVA
Objectives:
Field test soil gas equipment and survey techniques.
Lessons Learned:
A variety of equipment was field tested for Kerry's soil gas analysis
project, the details of which are contained in tonight's geology
report. For the amount of equipment to carry and manual effort
required to operate the hand auger, three people are ideal for each
EVAs in his study. Future EVAs may utilize ATVs, therefore possibly
reducing the amount of people required. An additional field test using
modified equipment and procedures will be able to conclude this.
Not too many layers of clothing are needed for EVAs on sunny and clear
days, even though surface temperature was around 4°C and wind was
moderate.
Always bring sample bags, since carrying rock samples by hand is
cumbersome and there are always interesting rocks to a geologist
around.
Equipment is best carried on an ATV to conserve human energy regardless
of travel distance, especially on longer duration EVAs. A cart that
could be towed by hand or a vehicle would be invaluable and ideal.
This could be used by the engineering crew as well, and may even allow
for small-scale remote labs.
Field test of equipment was deemed by the team to be successful,
therefore the primary objectives of this EVA were met. Additionally,
rock samples were returned to the Hab for closer inspection, details of
which are in the geology report.
