Log Book for March 7, 2007
Engineering Report
Artemis & Waller Reporting
Generator/Electricity:
Casper: not used
Wendy Hobbs Meter: 2883.9 hrs (+20.5 hrs since yesterday)
Voltage: 130 VAC
Frequency: 63 Hz
Oil Level: 7/8
Oil Pressure: 40 PSI
Water Drained: yes
Notes/Comments: Hobbs meter reading is from 19.50 Oil level was dropping this morning when i closed the generator off at 7.43. so I added 1/4 quart, partly from a new bottle. the water was drained, but hardly anything came out of the generator. however the water drain on the other side (see image in engineering folder of crew 59, when i get round to sending it) was flowing buckets.
Xantrex Inverter/Dynasty Batteries:
Time - Voltage (Temp Comp) - Load - Temp - Generator Running
20.10 - 24.7 - VDC - 7 - 17C - Yes
Notes/Comments: There is something strange with the generator readings on the inverter panel with a load this light, the voltage should read 26.9 or so, as we have the generator running. Will report what I find. I will for starters restart the generator. We turned the Generator off for 2.5 Hrs only. Just like the last few days. The batteries only last about 2 hours. By then the batteries will have dropped to 20.5 volts or so. The 'or so' is due to the fact that if the inverter panel shows the available energy at lower then 21, it will be impossible to get out of the 5 error menu on the panel. So it is very hard to tell for certain how far under 21 volts the batteries have dropped.
Fuel Status (as of 18:40):
Diesel: Approximate Reading: 7/8
Propane Tank: Approximate Reading: 55% (550 gallons = 2082.0 L)
Gasoline Quantity Remaining: 86 gallons = 325.5 L (-1 gallons since yesterday)
Notes/Comments: ATVs 1 and 2 used and immediately filled after the ride.
Oil Status:
GenSet Quantity: 2 quarts (-1 quarts since yesterday)
ATV Quantity: 4 quarts (no change since yesterday)
V'ger Quantity: 24 quarts (no change since yesterday)
Notes/Comments: I think resupply of genset oil is in order.
Water Status:
Outside Potable Water Tank Level: 50 gallons = 189.3 L
Trailer Potable Water Tank Level: 100 cm from the base
Potable Water Meter Reading: 20631.9 gallons = 78100.0 L (+156.2 gallons since yesterday)
Out to Toilet Meter Reading: 6664.9 gallons = 25229.3 L (+10.2 gallons since yesterday)
In to GreenHab Meter Reading: 7705.4 gallons = 29168.0 L (no change since yesterday)
Dishwasher Runs: 0
Notes/Comments: We are still having lots of problems with the internal water tank. When we fill it using creative methods to get volts to the pump outside (car battery; battery charger of the ATVs) we can fill the inside water tank fine. However it immediately looses its water in about 30 minutes. we can not find a leak (and after filling the water tank 4 times already the soil should be really soggy somewhere). At dinner we realized that we are pumping water in from a tank that should have been empty after 2 times filling the inside water tank. We therefore assume that the water is being siphoned back into the outside water tank. And believe us, that is NOT funny. Grant is checking our theory as I am typing this. And he is again filling the inside water tank. I am pretty certain that we did not use 160 gallons today. as the outside water tank is not empty and we reported only 135 gallons in the outside water tank last night. We would like to know how much water remains in the outside water tank before the level drops below the line that supplies the water to the hab. As the tank is buried in sand we cannot read the contents below 100 properly. therefore the 50 gallons from above are an estimate.
GreenHab:
Status: the grey water tank was pumped out to the GreenHab
Crops Watered: yes
Crop Condition: the plants still need re-potting. However due to the problems with the outside water tank continuing the re-potting was again postponed. About re-potting the tomato plants of the zero-gravity experiment that we can not consume: we do not have much space for re-potted plants so we would like to know if the experiment is ongoing and if so who is monitoring it. If the experiment is discontinued we would like to not re-pot anything that we can not eat. The plants were watered. soil is now kind of moist but for the plants that are fighting for space. The tomato plants from the growth experiment were hanging down by that time (12.00). They look a little better now.
Transportation:
V'ger Used: no
Oil Checked: no
Tire Status: good
Odometer: 184310 miles (no change since yesterday)
Kawasaki ATV-1 Used: yes
Oil Checked: yes
Fuel Consumed: 0.5 gallon = 1.9 L
Tire Status: good
Kawasaki ATV-2 Used: yes
Oil Checked: yes
Fuel Consumed: 0.5 gallon = 1.9 L
Tire Status: good
Kawasaki ATV-3 Used: no
Oil Checked: no
Tire Status: sux
Notes/Comments: V'ger is still in SLC. the next crew to use it will probably be crew 61
Miscellaneous Infrastructure:
HVAC: nothing to report
Mars Surface Suits: full report from our commander: S1 worked fine. PLSSS-2 problems with PTT, helmet, ring does not fit properly and the fan died in 4 problems with helmet to radio connector. PLSS-4 not enough air flowing into the helmet. 3 no problems PLSS-3 also no problems 1 1 PLSS-1 both no problems We can not find the faceplate that Gino has been using before as a space-helmet. This is regrettable as it diminishes the idea of a closed/real Mars EVA.
Computers/Networking Infrastructure: Internet is working fine
Upgrade Work: the internal water tank takes all of our time. So no upgrade work was done. and that is quite frustrating.
Notes/Comments: the broken taillight was not repaired, due to, you have heard this one before, the problems with the inside water tank.
