Journalist Report
Danielle Cormier Reporting
Last night, after all reports were turned in, Olathe gave us an excellent presentation on the research that she's conducting at MDRS. It was very informative and helped everyone on the crew to understand exactly what it is that we're looking for during sampling EVAs. Afterwards, the crew decided to unwind by watching a movie.
This morning we woke up to find that two additional crewmembers were feeling the effects of the cold germs that have been inhabiting the Hab. Some of the healthier crewmembers set out on a morning EVA regardless of this; we really need the samples for Olathe's research. The original plan had been to set out on ATVs to Candor Chasma, but after the ATV performance turned out to not be quite as good as we were hoping, that plan was abandoned and Lealem and Olathe set off on foot for Candor Chasma. And we really thought that we had repaired the ATVs! While Lealem and Olathe were out, Jon and Randy did some more work on the ATVs.
The original plan had been to do a scouting EVA in the afternoon, but with three crewmembers being under the weather and two crewmembers being tired from a strenuous morning EVA, it didn't seem like the best idea. So instead everyone was given time to work on their individual tasks. On the engineering front, Lealem and Jon got ATV-1 running fine, but ATV-2 is still having issues. Also, Jon found our problem with our external water supply system: five of the six impellers on the external pump have broken off. Danielle, who had been sick for two days but was finally feeling better, was itching to help getting the Hab into shape, so she took on the task of painting the wooden plank and steel brackets that will be used to add a shelf for toiletries in the washroom.
The plan for tonight is still in flux; we'll probably decide on a final plan over dinner. Meanwhile, some rain clouds are coming in over the Henry Mountains, and we might be getting some snow in a few hours.
