Journalist Report
Danielle Cormier Reporting
Last night got away from us in all the report-writing that we had to do and we didn't have time to do any of the presentations that we had planned. So we decided to stay in this morning and do the two presentations in question. The first presentation was on the radio communications protocol and was given by Danielle. The second presentation was on the Field Documentation Methodology (FDM) and was given by Melissa. A long discussion ensued; as most of us have a certain amount of experience with the FDM protocol already, we had some good ideas about exactly how FDM should be applied in the field and how the data should be organized and archived afterwards. Danielle, who has some experience in database design, volunteered to put together a database to consolidate all of the data gathered using the FDM protocol. This database will be developed after the end of the rotation.
In the afternoon, Melissa and Olathe headed out on ATVs for the third EVA of our rotation. Soon after their departure however, one of the ATVs, which has been known to have problems before, stopped functioning. While Melissa and Olathe were trying to get it started again, the second ATV-died and subsequently refused to start again. Thankfully, the ATV-troubles happened not too far from the Hab. Since Melissa and Olathe are scientists, not engineers, Randy and Lealem decided to suit up and take care of the ATVs while Melissa and Olathe continued on a pedestrian EVA (Melissa commented on her ATV-troubles by saying "I think it sounded transmissionny"). Then while Randy and Lealem were trying to restart the ATVs, Lealem's radio stopped functioning. Randy and Lealem were nevertheless able to get one of the ATVs running again and used it to tow the other ATV-back to the Hab. Melissa and Olathe were also able to still get a fair amount of work done despite this plethora of equipment failures.
The evening will be spent writing reports and hopefully, there will be time left for some other activities. The crew has been hoping to watch together a documentary done on crew 44's rotation to MDRS last year. Crew 44 included Melissa, Danielle and Lealem.
