Engineering Report
Brogan Hetrick Reporting
Generator/Electricity:
Casper: not used
Wendy Hobbs Meter: 2235.2 hrs (+15.2 hrs since yesterday)
Voltage: 116 VAC
Frequency: 59 Hz
Oil Level: 7/8
Oil Pressure: 40 PSI
Water Drained: no
Notes/Comments: Generator frequency was indicating 55 Hz at the local control panel while taking rounds tonight. (At the generator itself) On the inverter, it was reading 59Hz. It seems to me that the frequency control is not functioning properly. We have had the generator shut off twice now, once two days ago and once today. When we attempted to restart today, everything started fine, but when we took the switch to the run position, the generator just shut off. We waited about five minutes and tried to start it again. This time is stayed on, but the frequency kept going up. I turned the frequency down until it finally maintained around 60 Hz. Then, when the inverter picked up the generator, the frequency dropped to about 57 Hz. I manually brought it back up to around 60 Hz, but it would drop back to between 58-59 Hz. At the inverter, the generator readings were 58 Hz, 115 VAC. I think the initial problem is that run power was not getting to the control panel, and this was shutting off the generator set. This may be a symptom of the frequency problem, unrelated completely, or the frequency fluctuations me be caused by power issues with the control panel. I looked inside the panel, and everything looks normal. There are no burn marks, loose wires, etc. We will be watching the generator and inverter readings very closely.
Xantrex Inverter/Dynasty Batteries:
Time - Voltage (Temp Comp) - Load - Temp - Generator Running
18:45 - 27.0 - 12 - 06 - Yes
Fuel Status (as of 18:45):
Diesel: Approximate Reading: 1/2
Propane Tank: Approximate Reading: 19% (190 gallons = 719.2 L)
Gasoline Quantity Remaining: 73 gallons = 276.3 L (-4 gallons since yesterday)
Notes/Comments: We drained fuel from ATV 1 today while trouble shooting a problem. When the throttle was pressed, ATV 1 would lose power and stall out. Figuring that it was not getting fuel I checked to see if it was selected to the main tank. It was not, so I switched it. This did not however solve the problem. ATV 2 backfired and stalled out a couple of times. We thought that ATV 1 and ATV 2 backfiring and stalling might mean the fuel was bad. However, while Seth drained and refilled ATV 1 with fuel from a different canister, I took ATV 2 for a short run, and it seemed to work pretty well. Because of this, we are undecided on whether the fuel really is bad. If anyone knows a way to test the fuel, that might be helpful.
Oil Status:
GenSet Quantity: 17 quarts (no change since yesterday)
ATV Quantity: 15 quarts (-2 quarts since yesterday)
V'ger Quantity: 15 quarts (no change since yesterday)
Water Status:
Outside Potable Water Tank Level: 300 gallons = 1135.6 L
Trailer Potable Water Tank Level: 68.5 cm from the base
Potable Water Meter Reading: 17994.0 gallons = 68114.5 L (+40 gallons since yesterday)
Out to Toilet Meter Reading: 6009.9 gallons = 22749.9 L (+9 gallons since yesterday)
In to GreenHab Meter Reading: 7257.4 gallons = 27472.2 L (no change since yesterday)
Flushes: 0
Showers: 2
Sponge Baths: 0
Notes/Comments: We are still having problems keeping water in the gray water system, but because of ATV and Generator problems we were unable to troubleshoot this problem further today.
GreenHab:
Status: Still having some leaking from the Gray water system. The flush water has operated normally since we replaced the transfer pump.
Crops Watered: yes
Crop Condition: Crops are wonderful. Anna has started making the map of all the plants and has planted much more. Things are looking really good in there.
Transportation:
V'ger Used: no
Oil Checked: no
Tire Status: good
Odometer: 0 miles (+820300 miles since January 21, 2007)
Kawasaki ATV-1 Used: yes
Oil Checked: yes
Fuel Consumed: 5.0 gallons = 18.9 L
Tire Status: good
Kawasaki ATV-2 Used: yes
Oil Checked: yes
Fuel Consumed: 0.1 gallon = 0.4 L
Tire Status: good
Kawasaki ATV-3 Used: yes
Oil Checked: yes
Fuel Consumed: 0.1 gallon = 0.4 L
Tire Status: good
Notes/Comments: When ATV3 was retested this morning, the repairs did not hold. We were able to return it to slow the leak somewhat, but it still needs significant repairs. ATV 1 and ATV 2 had some problems. ATV 2 seems to be working properly now, but ATV 1 is still losing power when the throttle is pressed. We will continue troubleshooting tomorrow. (See Notes/Comments under Gasoline for more information)
Miscellaneous Infrastructure:
HVAC: Nothing further to report.
Mars Surface Suits: Seth attempted to polish the suit helmets today, but it did not seem to help the scratches. This is not a big problem. He was just trying to fix them up a bit.
Computers/Networking Infrastructure: Nothing further to report.
Appliances: Nothing further to report.
Data Logger: Nothing further to report.
Upgrade Work: Nothing further to report.
Notes/Comments: Nothing further to report.
