Log Book for January 26, 2007
Engineering Report
Brogan Hetrick Reporting
Generator/Electricity:
Casper: not used
Wendy Hobbs Meter: 2201.2 hrs (+11.7 hrs since yesterday)
Voltage: 114 VAC
Frequency: 59 Hz
Oil Level: 7/8
Oil Pressure: 40 PSI
Water Drained: no
Notes/Comments: This morning we noticed that the generator had shut itself off during the night. Battery voltage was at its lower limit when we noticed. After investigation, it was determined that the lug on the starter-motor side of the cable that runs from the battery to the starter motor had come loose. It had shorted by connecting to something and the resulting spark destroyed the lug. The lug was replaced and electrical tape was used to better insulate the area around the connection. The generator has operated normally since the repair.
Xantrex Inverter/Dynasty Batteries:
Time - Voltage (Temp Comp) - Load - Temp - Generator Running
19:00 - 25.9 - 15 - 09 - Yes
Fuel Status (as of 18:45):
Diesel: Approximate Reading: 1/2
Notes/Comments: The diesel level is slightly above 1/2.
Propane Tank: Approximate Reading: 20% (200 gallons = 757.1 L)
Gasoline Quantity Remaining: 77 gallons = 291.5 L (-6 gallons since yesterday)
Notes/Comments: Six gallons of gasoline were used in the ATVs for EVAs today.
Oil Status:
GenSet Quantity: 25 quarts (no change since yesterday)
GenSet Quantity Resupplied: 24 quarts
ATV Quantity: 20 quarts (-5 quarts since yesterday)
ATV Quantity Resupplied: 24 quarts
V'ger Quantity: 15 quarts (no change since yesterday)
V'ger Quantity Resupplied: 12 quarts
Notes/Comments: We used 5 quarts of oil today, all in ATV3, due to the crack in the manifold. We are considering trying to seal the crack with liquid nails, but request further guidance as to how we should proceed. Ideally, the manifold should be welded. If we do use liquid nails or other means of repairing, the manifold may require complete replacement. Please advise.
Water Status:
Outside Potable Water Tank Level: 300 gallons = 1135.6 L
Trailer Potable Water Tank Level: 86 cm from the base
Potable Water Meter Reading: 17888.7 gallons = 67715.9 L (+117.8 gallons since yesterday)
Out to Toilet Meter Reading: 5997.3 gallons = 22702.2 L (+9.5 gallons since yesterday)
In to GreenHab Meter Reading: 7257.4 gallons = 27472.2 L (no change since yesterday)
Flushes: 0
Showers: 2
Sponge Baths: 0
Notes/Comments: Today we lost flushing water. Upon investigating, we noticed that RFT1 and RFT2 had no water flow. We filled both tanks, cleaned the filter bags around the pumps and the feed-rings. We also noticed that there was no water in the tank above Aquatic Tank 4. We determined that the fuse was blown for the transfer pump from Aquatic Tank 4 to this tank. We replaced the fuse and also replaced the filters. After having completed this, everything seemed to be running great. About 3 hours later, water was noticed pooling just outside the forward airlock for the GreenHab. While investigating, we noticed that RFT1 only had a very small trickle, RFT2 had no flow, and the tank above Aquatic Tank 2 was nearly empty. It appears that there is a leak from one of the Aquatic Tanks or the interconnecting piping. We will investigate further tomorrow morning.
GreenHab:
Status: Today Anna planted some lettuce, mint and tomatoes. She also cleared out some of the over growth in the spinach and made a compost bucket.
Crops Watered: yes
Crop Condition: We are eating spinach and radishes as our salad tonight for dinner. Yeah!
Transportation:
V'ger Used: no

Tire Status: good
Odometer: 0 miles (+820300 miles since January 21, 2007)
Kawasaki ATV- 1 Used: yes
Oil Checked: yes
Fuel Consumed: 2 gallons = 7.6 L
Tire Status: good
Kawasaki ATV-2 Used: yes
Oil Checked: yes
Fuel Consumed: 2 gallons = 7.6 L
Tire Status: good
Kawasaki ATV-3 Used: yes
Oil Checked: yes
Fuel Consumed: 2 gallons = 7.6 L
Tire Status: good
Notes/Comments: See Notes/Comments under Oil.
Miscellaneous Infrastructure:
HVAC: Nothing further to report.
Mars Surface Suits: We have determined that airflow from the suits must blow directly on each face mask to prevent it from collecting too much moisture and obstructing visibility.
Computers/Networking Infrastructure: Nothing further to report.
Appliances: Nothing further to report.
Data Logger: Nothing further to report.
Upgrade Work: Generator start pump lug replaced. (See Notes/Comments for Wendy)
Notes/Comments: Anna and Seth have been wonderfully innovative and flexible as problems have arisen. Our team is working together well, and I could not be happier with it.
