Seth Koterba Reporting
Our first full day on Mars ended with a debacle that extended into the early morning hours of day two. At 11pm the lights went out and the engineering team sprang to action. After extensive trouble shooting they returned power to the Hab before discovering that the heating and toilet systems no longer worked. Thankfully, in the end, all systems were returned to normal operation, disaster was diverted, and human life on Mars continues.
The morning brought with it a beautiful day fit for the crew's second EVA. Crew scientists John, Cassie, and Adrienne and EVA engineer Seth donned their spacesuits and headed out in search of interesting geologic and biologic sites. While the EVA team trolled over the Martian regolith, human factors researcher Liz got Ryan and Anna suited up in astronaut underwear for the initial stages of her research on physiological measurement systems and astronaut performance. Given the 80’s like appearance of the astronaut ware, Ryan and Anna felt it appropriate to dance and sing to the music of Aha.
After lunch the crew headed out to a nearby region of scientific interest. Crew biologist Adrienne, geologist Cassie, and executive officer/biologist John gave the crew short presentations on their respective scientific fields. Following these very informative presentations, the crew set out to hunt for cool rocks and enjoy some leisure time tossing around a Frisbee.
As day two comes to a close, the crew looks forward to more science, EVAs, and Hab repairs during day three. Continue to check this website for more reports and pictures.
