Notes: Tanks 2&4 read yesterday and Tanks 3 & 5 NH3 just not taken.

Normal chores in the GreenHab were performed on each of these occasions.
  • Both aerators are working, one is in Tank #2 and one in Tank #4.
  • Only air bubbles in Tank #2 & 4
  • All plants were sprayed with water and fed.
  • The sump pump is connected to a timer which activates the system at 12:00 hours and 00:00 hours.
  • The TST tank is still being filled as required by the pump.
  • Water level in the plant buckets is 5cm from the top in the white bucket and 6 cm from the top in the orange bucket.
  • Water in tank #5 is higher ~20cm below highest salt line at 12:00.
Additional Chores:
  • Estimating grey water usage (shower ~2.5 gallons for our crew, 5 gallons per washing dishes once per day [max 10 gallons if really dirty], washing hands 8 to 16 ounces per wash]
  • TST tank work
Moved task to tomorrow. However, did send request if alternate power location is acceptable.
  • Evaporation test begun today to document water loss from the treatment tanks as part of the grey water system balance. I used a 2000 ml Pyrex beaker with a 4.75 inch diameter surface area, and it started with 1400ml water at 15:32.
Open Issues:

Grey water input is low
  • I have begun actively trying to document water usage. I assumed that roughly 80% of the water used is grey water, which is about 27 gallons. I continue to monitor how the system performs.
The Southern louvers need to open more for proper ventilation.
  • Yesterday's finding: the louvers opened approximately the same distance under solar and generator power.
  • Current Action: Determine current operating voltage. At 09:45, the fan was operating on solar power at 16.06 VDC as read at fusebox. It was then switched to generator power which provides 17.8 VDC as read at fusebox.
  • Suggested Action: Possibly attach more solar panels to increase voltage to the fan. Before this can be done though, I believe that the GreenHab electrical system needs to be documented first to provide for a safe and correct installation of additional solar panels
[For example where do the 3 internal solar panels go to?].
HOBO logger system not operating
  • Previous Condition: HOBO shuttle appeared to successfully download data from the 3 H8 loggers. However, it was not able to download to the Boxcar 4.3 program on the computer, and testing of the HOBO shuttle, the connector cable, and the computer port did not reveal any obvious issues.
  • Observation: The computer with the Boxcar 4.3 program was taken out to the Greenhab to download the data directly. In each case, the program failed to 1) "Get Status", 2) "readout" error #6 appeared indicating a failure to communicate, and 3) "Launch" the hobo was found, but logger error #9 appeared.
  • Action: Emailed Onsite (who provided the HOBOs) about how to fix this problem; waiting for a reply.
Treatment systems appears not to be removing nitrate.
  • Current Condition: The system appears to be mostly algae based. There is no earthy smell indicative of nitrification/denitrification occurring.
  • Suggested Action: Still diagnosing system and communicating with mission support, so no action as of yet.
