Guidelines for Marking Cardinal
Directions in Panoramic Photos
Jason Schwier Reporting

When making panoramic shots of a landscape, it is important to note what the cardinal directions are. As the norm is to only have at most three people on an EVA, it is not possible to have a unique person each be a direction. Additionally, it is not recommended to change photographers in the middle of the panoramic shots.

To standardize the process of labeling cardinal directions, the following guidelines are recommended for each direction.

North:
If you have the road reflector, hold it vertically with the red reflective circle upwards. If you do not have the reflector, hold both arms up vertically.

East:
If you have the road reflector, hold it in your left hand, with your left arm against your side. Hold your right arm horizontally across your chest, optionally making an E shape with three fingers on your right hand.

South:
If you have the road reflector, hold it vertically with the red reflective circle downwards. Keep both arms against your sides, appearing like you are not making any indications.

West:
If you have the reflector, hold it in your left hand, with your left arm against your side. Hold your right arm vertically upwards, optionally making a W shape with three fingers on your right hand.
