Log Book for February 16, 2004
EVA Report
Crew 24 Reporting

Duration: 16:12-18:32 (2 hours 20 minutes)

Participants: Digby Tarvin, Celeste Gale, Louise Wynn, Kyoichi Sasazawa, Bob McNally

Equipment: Cameras, GPS's, map, compass.

Route:
  1. 4250.93N 0518.17E to 4250.69N 0518.56E
  2. 4250.69N 0518.56E to 4250.32N 0519.09E
  3. 4250.32N 0519.09E to 4250.17N 0519.38E
  4. 4250.17N 0519.38E to 4250.93N 0518.17E
Objectives/Work Done: This EVA was to provide some practice in navigation while unimpeded by a suit, as well as give some experience of the terrain before trying to negotiate it in suits and on ATVs. In addition, the crew geologists took the opportunity to familiarise the rest of the crew with some of the geological features of the area.

Weather: Clear and Sunny.

Maximum distance from Hab: 13km.

Lessons Learned:
  1. Relating topography to the map is often quite difficult except when on elevated terrain.
  2. Estimating the size of distant obstacles is also prone to large errors due to a lack of familiar objects to provide scale.
  3. Effective geology requires slow progress due to the need for frequent stopping.
