Crew 19 Goals

I. Astronomy:

Observatory:
  • Clean out dust and sand which has gotten inside the dome. Seal edges to prevent further penetration.
  • Make sure Automadome has been set up so the dome rotates synchronously with the telescope.
  • Analyze the power supplied to the dome rotation and figure our how to maximize observation runs.
  • Figure out what else would need to be automated in order to allow full observation ability from inside the Hab (and eventually over the Internet)
Telescope:
  • Fine tune telescope mounting
  • Determine the limiting magnitude (how faint it can see) for the various fields by observing standard fields and calibrating the magnitudes of resolvable stars
Astronomical Research:
  • Observe the Lunar Eclipse on May 15, 2003
  • Variable Star Photometry: We would like to observe a few medium bright (6-8 magnitude) short period variable stars. The short periods would allow us to view the light curve from a full period from one night's observations. Over the course of a two week hab rotation, a crew could gather light curves and several times of maximum light for 1-3 stars to refine the period. Observations of standard fields would also allow for the calibration of the magnitudes. Different filters could be used to determine the (B-V) color index of selected stars.
  • We would like to a) demonstrate that this can be done and b) provide detailed instructions so that future hab rotations can also do real astronomical research as a part of their stay at the MDRS.
  • Exact target list would depend on: the accessible and optimal portions of the sky based on the mobility of the telescope with the CCD and associated cables attached.
  • Exposure lengths allowed by the tracking of the telescope
Possible Target List, (table right), is composed of medium to high amplitude (>.05 mag) delta scuti stars with a right ascension between 5 and 15 hours (extracted from list provided by Dr. Eric Hintz of Brigham Young University).

Our target list will be expanded to include variable stars of other types, such as Cepheids, RR Lyraes, and eclipsing binary systems.

II. GreenHab:
  • The primary goal regarding the GreenHab is to disassemble the living machine, and clean it out thoroughly.
  • Take regular temperature measurements outside and inside the greenhouse.
  • Measure the light intensity incident on the greenhouse and intensity in the greenhouse at various times throughout the day.
  • Take measurements to construct a rear airlock provide a buffer zone between the plants and the outside air. This should cut down on hot air entering during the summer and cold air entering in the winter.
  • Fill the bottom few feet of the polycarbonate exterior with packing peanuts to improve the insulation of the structure.
  • Coordinate with Gary Fisher and the rest of the GreenHab group on anything else they would like done during our stay.
III. Other Miscellaneous Tasks:
  • Summerize the Hab by installing the air conditioners, cleaning and preparing for work crews and summer rotations
  • Take detailed measurements of the area to give future crews an idea of the layout.
  • Take measurements of the GreenHab and Hab itself for future crews.
  • Collect and consolidate instructions on how to use the hab for two reasons, a) to help those who won't have a chance to be oriented by the leaving crew and b) to be able to help mission support during the next season of Hab rotations.
