Log Book for May 9, 2003
Commander's Summary
Brent Bos Reporting
Although it pained us to do it, we held our regular morning meeting at 7:30 am today. We wanted to give the long distance EVA team as much time as possible to get their work done. The plan was to start suiting up at 8:00 so the meeting was kept short.
We agreed that today's EVA was to be a long distance EVA with the University of Michigan's pressurized rover. The EVA team led by Dave, and including Elia and Simone, was to travel to Salt Wash to obtain samples for Simone and Elia's biology experiment and for Dave to do some follow-up geology work left over from Expedition 1. Then they were to return to the Hab in between 4:00 and 5:00 pm so that the freshly arrived French TV crew could take the footage we promised them.
The team suited up late and entered the airlock at 9:43 am. They drove off in the pressurized rover at 10:49.
Back at the Hab I processed more dust samples and Petra assisted Mark with his water contamination study. Joan gathered the last of the observatory equipment that needs to be packed up tomorrow.
The EVA team returned to the Hab and exited the airlock 1.5 hours late. The TV crew eventually gave up on them and we believe they left the area around 6:00 pm. Please send my sincere apologies to Charles and his crew.
Due to the late arrival of the EVA team and their need for food and drink, the time for our evening meeting is currently in question. I am presently hoping for 9:00 pm.
It will probably be a very late night given the amount of work the crew still has to do.
Tomorrow we are planning on running one more EVA before the simulation ends at noon. The plan is to run a short ATV EVA to the southwest and then return to the Hab area and retrieve all of the biology experiments on foot. To get all of the work done tomorrow that we need to, the EVA team will be suiting up early again, this time at 7:30 am. If they are not in the airlock by 8:30 am, the ATV portion of the EVA will be cancelled.
We are expecting several visitors tomorrow after the simulation ends at noon. It promises to be a very busy day, both in and out of sim.
