EVA-11 Report
Elia Husiatynski Reporting

Team Leader: Dave
Team: Dave, Joan, Simone
HabCom: Elia

The objective of this EVA is to hunt down Moby Dick: its goal is to reach Factory Butte without climbing over Skyline Rim. I'm positive that this EVA Team will make it. It consists of our best ATV-riders Dave, Joan and Simone and is led by Dave who has proved himself a very good EVA-Teamleader.

This EVA is mainly following the path taken by yesterday's EVA-team: heading north via Lowell Hwy, down towards Muddy Creek, via the Badland Labyrinth to Coal Mine Wash which they will ride through upwards to Skyline Rim Road for going south on it until they reach the flattest region upon Factory Bench which will bring them straight west to Factory Butte - hopefully. An additional option for the way back - again, if time permits - is having a look at the mine at the northern branch of Coal Mine Wash.

Post EVA Debrief: The EVA Team made it to Factory Butte in a little bit more than an hour, which is well within the simulation safety constraint. After they found their way out of Coal Mine Wash on the spot yesterday's EVA Team had scouted - another one they had tried was a dead end - they went over the flat of Factory Bench and reached the Road 5 minutes later. A quick drive on the Road led them to a trail up to Factory Butte.

On their - mostly much slower - way back they have been looking for water sampling sites (for Mark's Water Contamination Experiment) and sites that might offer a chance to bring good results for the Methane Detection Drilling Experiment. The Team has also been scouting for other locations with salt abundance for the Halophile Search. First they visited the site of the spire right east of Factory Butte before they found an interesting spot for drilling at the Coal Mine on the roads end.

Right before they returned to the Hab via Lowell Highway they scouted the Candor Chasma area to the east of the Hab. After their return they retrieved the UV-dosimeter, the dust trap and the liquid samples of halophiles. At last the Observatory was checked.

Report on state of the ATVs:
  • One has got a slow leak on the front left tire
  • All drive belts need a check
  • All rear brakes are weak
And one of the backpack boxes has been shattered during a minor ATV incident.
