Objectives and Plan: The objectives of this EVA were to: 1) find salt samples for Elia and Simone's halophile research, 2) look for a few sites for Mark's drilling and find a water sample or two for him, and 3) evaluate some of the trails to the North.

Our plan was to head straight for Coal Mine Wash (so that we would have enough air to walk back to the Hab if our ATV's broke down) and look for salt samples there. On our way back we were hoping to take a different path from Muddy Creek, and then see some land to the east, at the north end of Lowell Hwy. From there, if there was enough time, we would go to White Rock reservoir to pick up a salt sample. We accomplished most of the goals, though there were some changes made to the plan as we went.

Heading up to Muddy Creek was easy, since we have already been there, but getting the road to Coal Mine Wash was a little more interesting - trying to decide if a few motorbike tracks make a trail, or if we should search for a bigger trail (see GPS plotted route if possible). We managed to find our way to the Wash, but a few trails were missing on the way. There was no trail in Coal Mine Wash, but luckily no trail was really needed - we followed a few bike tracks in the direction we wanted across the flat wash. Simone took a sample or two from near the Muddy River there (not much salt though), and we took no samples from the wash - no salt there at all. We turned around returned the way we came. We tried to find another route to Lowell Hwy from Muddy Creek, but it looked in rough shape, and the slow leak in Dave's tire wasn't going to help. We went to Lowell Hwy the way we came, and marked a potential drilling site for Mark on the way. We traveled north on the "highway" to a high point with a great view and headed south again to White Rock Reservoir where we took a few water and salt samples before going back to the Hab.
