Log Book for May 1, 2003
Commander's Summary
Brent Bos Reporting

We had our typical morning meeting at 8:00 am again today to finalize the plan for the day.

Our primary goal for the day was another ATV EVA primarily to the north of the Hab lasting 4 hours and 46 minutes covering 30 km. It went longer than expected and didn't cover all the territory planned - a typical aspect of field research. Dave Scott was the EVA commander again and led Petra and Elia to the points of interest. They collected samples for Simone and Elia's biology research and obtained a sample for Mark.

The non-EVA crewmembers did a better job with their exercise protocol. Simone, Mark, Joan and I all got our 1 hour of exercise in while the others were out exploring. Then is the best time to get it done because the Hab is less crowded.

I was finally able to get some dust data optically today after cleaning the equipment. It was great to finally see this instrument work in the field! The digital microscope and a good laboratory balance are the two primary instruments for my dust contamination study.

We had our evening meeting at 6:00 pm instead of later as is typical since we were all available. We talked about our plans for the next 3 days. We are going to take Sunday off except for a small EVA to retrieve some samples. Tomorrow I will be going outside for the first time in simulation on an EVA to deploy some dust samplers and explore Red Canyon to the northeast. On Saturday Mark will be leading an EVA to do some drilling and obtain subsurface samples for his experiment.

Tonight dinner will be around 7:00 and then we are all going to try and get our reports in earlier than normal and prepare for tomorrow. The crew seemed better rested today and hopefully our early start on the evening's work will produce the same result tomorrow.
