Biology Report
Petra Rettberg Reporting
Today we planned and prepared the biological experiments that will start tomorrow.
One experiment deals with the measurement of the biological effective solar UV radiation and its penetration capability into the natural soil. One soil sample was collected near the hab, sieved and filled into cuvettes of 1 mm and 2 mm optical path length. These cuvettes are fixed on top of UV dosimeter foils near an electronic UV dosimeter for comparison. In addition one dosimeter will be exposed without any soil on top.
In the other biological experiment the survivability of halophilic archaea under the local environmental conditions will be examined. 3 species of archaea will be exposed for different periods of time in salt cristals, in addition to a parallel sample of one of these species in suspension.
Today all samples and dosimeters have been prepared.
