Mobile Agents Voice Commands
Bill Clancey & John Dowding Reporting
This is the standard vocabulary for the Mobile Agents voice commanding system tested at MDRS during Rotation 16 (April 2003). Many variants are possible (e.g., say "photos" or "pictures" instead of "images"). Location names may be selected from predefined vegetable names (e.g., okra) or referred to as numbered sites or waypoints.
EVAs are modeled as a list of activities with locations, durations, and thresholds. Besides a list of several dozen predefined names (e.g., "climbing out of canyon"), activities may be described using the phrases "site <number>" or "waypoint <number>.
The Mobile Agents system continuously tracks the astronauts in order to set and broadcast alerts, so they do not need to use GPS devices. The system stores and distributes science data both locally and remotely. It monitors the EVA schedule and reminds the astronauts about the plan.
The voice commanding system has been implemented by John Dowding, member of the RIALIST group, which is part of the RIACS organization at NASA-Ames.
