Log Book for April 3, 2003
Commander's Check-In
Bill Clancey Reporting

Time: 18:48

Weather: low 41F (5.0C); high 65.1F (18.4C) Partly sunny with moderately strong NNE winds. A few snow flurries.

Crew Physical Status: Feeling a bit rushed. ATV driver lost control on a turn; no injuries beyond bruises.

Brief Narrative of Field Mission Results: After a five minute 09:00 briefing, work continued on the Mobile Agents system, moving from hardware to scenario testing (finally). Abby, Brent, and Bill went out for over three hours of "baseline" geology exploration (see photos). Upon return, the Mobile Agents group had tested the first scenario, dubbed 1A1, at the workbench. Alarms and email updates to the remote science team were deemed to be too frequent and bogging down the system. Adjustments were made to reparametrize the models and work down from longer durations until performance is not an issue. (Even with today's supercomputer laptops, the Mobile Agents system will benefit from another order of magnitude CPU speed.) We then shifted to scenario 1A2 with Brent & Abby having their first trial to give voice commands to the Mobile Agents agents.

Meanwhile, scenario planning was completed for a hour long walk around the hab, dubbed 1B. Like the first workbench tests, this EVA scenario is fully scripted, to demonstrate that all voice commands are working correctly. Some adjustments have been identified in managing Mobile Agents memory and processing to enable 1B to work correctly. Designs and improvements are in process.

As a sign of progress, the group discussed coming challenges in integrating the ERA into the system and providing appropriate repeater coverage.

Frank Schubert and Bill Clancey reviewed the GreenHab to discuss possibilities for future collaboration in developing monitoring, control, and instructional systems for crews.

Successes for the day include: Routine procedures have been established for running, debugging, and improving the Mobile Agents system; ERA has made its first "autonomous" move to a given waypoint (using information from two heading sensors); NREN group completed testing of an alternative small satellite dish; webcam set up to enable ERA subgroup in their truck to coordinate with people in the hab.

The executive committee met for 45 minutes at 1700 to review progress and plan for tomorrow.

Plans for Tomorrow: After completing 1A2 and 1B at the workbench, we will reconfigure the system for doing 1A2 and 1B in the real world.

Report Transmission Schedule: Photos for April 2 and 3 have been transmitted.

Maintenance: All systems are operating normally. Frank Schubert is working on the GreenHab, cleaning up some vats and plants, and setting up an area for growing plants.

EVA Narrative/Data/Interpretations: See geology report.

Inventory: We are making a loaf of bread every day.

Miscellaneous: Misrecognized voice commands can be quite humorous: The speech system today heard Abby say, "Send it time in cucumber and halt." Quite appropriately, it responded, "I do not understand that command."
