Log Book for April 2, 2003
Commander's Check-In
Bill Clancey Reporting

Time: 18:11

Weather: low 54.5F (12.5C); high 70.9F (21.6C) Mostly cloudy until mid-morning; windy from west-southwest.

Crew Physical Status: Focused; trying to establish an appropriate pace for the longer run. One nose bleed from low humidity; treated with a salt water solution (MDRS needs to have isotonic Saline solution added to the meds kit).

Brief Narrative of Field Mission Results: The 09:00 briefing was brief, focusing on items for Frank Schubert to pick up for us. Yesterday's work continued on the Mobile Agents system, pinning down root problems from Monday and demonstrating improvements or workarounds. Work continued intensely until the usual daily debriefing at 17:00. By routine, the morning briefing is held standing on the lower deck, with everyone attending. The end of day debriefing is held sitting down on the upper deck, with only representatives from each group attending (to allow others to close down equipment for the night).

Successes for the day include: Confirmation of significant improvements to system performance (allowing additional tests revealing new puzzles); implementation of improvements to speech processing to provide feedback; further testing of the Exploration Robotic Assistant (ERA) for alternative tracking methods; return to full operation of the Minibook that failed Monday (including order of a new power regulator and alternative running configuration until they arrive); verification of good audio recording during the EVA simulation yesterday using radio and wireless microphones; baseline EVA with the geologists, audiotaped using wireless microphones, demonstrating again the collaboration style and additional methods of measuring and comparing strata; restoring the timelapse video to operation (a version incompatibility). NREN also provided a sustained high-bandwidth internet connection from 09:15-18:00.

The executive committee met for 45 minutes at 1700, joined by the GRC/NREN group, to review progress and plan for tomorrow.

Plans for Tomorrow: The team agreed to have another half-day of in-house integration testing, aiming for the first real test (1A1) after lunch. In the morning the geologists will carry out another."baseline" EVA (in shirt sleeves) to go to areas we are not planning to reach in Mobile Agents tests.

Report Transmission Schedule: CDR check in around 18:30. Geologists will write a report about today's baseline EVA. Photos for March 30, 31, April 1 have been transmitted.

Maintenance: All systems are operating normally. Frank will do periodic maintenance on the incinolet.

EVA Narrative/Data/Interpretations: Geologist's report will comment on suited vs. shirtsleeve experience. The main differences observed were addiitional methods of examining and sensing rock and soil characteristics (e.g., paintbrush, acid test).

Inventory: Frank Schubert delivered additional fruit, vegetables, coffee filters, coffee, orange juice.

Miscellaneous: Marc Seibert (GRC) asked whether the weather vane was providing any data. We explained that when the heavy metal mast twists into an undulating S, you know it's windy.
