Commander's Report
David Fuller Reporting

The Discovery Channel Canada film team, consisting of the producer Mark Miller and cameraman Derek Reich, come today to film the Hab and our activities. Last night the weather really threatened to keep us indoors, with rain and gusty winds, but the morning dawned clear and cold. The crew arrived at 9:00, and set up for shots inside. We ran through a planning session to discuss the day's activities, then we suited up Jody, Kim, and April and departed for Lith Canyon. The EVA team were able to use all three ATVs this morning since we finally got keys made.

Once at the canyon the film team followed the EVA team around as they scrambled deeper into the canyon, looking for features that Jody was investigating. The wind had picked up and the chill factor became a major discomfort for the group not in space suits. Undaunted, however, the EVA team pushed on to a major discovery.

Jody found a large rock with features on it called slickensides, which describes how a rock looks after it slides past another rock. He said this was really exciting, because he had not seen any such feature here before, and nothing like it had been described by earlier teams.

After a couple of hours of filming, we went back to the Hab, had a quick lunch, and resumed shooting. All members of the Hab team were interviewed about the meaning of going to Mars and the significance of the MDRS. I would guess that they shot at least 4 hours of tape, all to be boiled down to about 8 minutes on air.

This day was the most exhausting yet. I guess the combination of cold, the stress of being film stars, and the extra long EVA has really sapped us. The rest of crew is talking about watching a movie, but I'm going to bed as soon as I finish this report.
