Log Book for March 21, 2003
General Engineering Report
Derek O'Keeffe Reporting

Generator/Electricity: The gasoline generator was filled at 0630 and again at 1800.This generator continues to be the main source of power for the Hab.

Water: Transferred 30 gallons at 08.53

Telescope: Today the crew spent some time investigating both the optical and the radio telescopes at the MDRS.

Optical Telescope (Musk Observatory): The VNC client could not be found on the Hab Laptop, so we went to the dome to check that the PC up there was switched on as a server. However the telescope pc was switched off and when we tried to turn it on - it would only enter "Safe Mode" - it would not tell us what the problem was and all we could see that was wrong was that there was no internet connection. Therefore we did not know if the cable had been disconnected (RJ45), broken or if the network card was broken. We did a sanity check by bringing a laptop to the observatory and connecting to the line and successfully using TCP/IP which means the hardware of the line connection is sound. Therefore the problem lies with the PC itself. This could have something to do with the fact that the side of the PC is off and the internal boards are now quite dusty - was it opened / switched off due to lightning strike or recent Generac generator issues? We liased with Mission Support and Peter Detterline as to the next course of action and we are currently awaiting their response. Note: A spare pc has been found in a cardboard box in the Hab - is this a new / replacement pc for the Observatory?

Radio Telescope: We inspected the physical hardware of the antenna array and then followed the lead into the Hab where we found the other end wrapped in electrical tape (due probably for safety reasons after recent electrical storms). We then connected up the antenna to the Jove receiver and endeavoured to connect it to the Hab Laptop. However we subsequently discovered that the input jack on the soundcard seems to be malfunctioning. So we downloaded the Jove Software on a different laptop (while liaising with John Samouce and Mission Support) and connected up the jove receiver box. The system appears to be functioning although confirmation of our results is still pending.

Everest Rover: The Rover generator has been running all day, no problems.

Computers: All machines and networks are running well.

GreenHab: Crew XV has endeavoured to comply with Garry Fisher's requests to monitor the GreenHabs conditions, temperatures taken today: 12.26 Temp. Inside 105F 19.53 Temp. Inside 52F We were unable to record humidity as we could not locate hygrometer.

Additional Activities: An EVA team spent 3hrs in the field today in full simulation (a roundtrip of 16km) to various geological features (see geological report) using ATVs. No problems with the ATVs or the suits. A webcam for a University of Michigan open day was installed at the Hab and will be operating tomorrow from 0800-1400 MT.
