Crew Diary
April Childress Reporting
Today began the new daily job rotations. Kim and David took over the generator maintenance along with the cooking duties, and by 7:30 a.m. they served up a nice breakfast of French toast and sausage. Kim kept pushing us to finish off the food while David called us to order. The planning meeting mostly covered the preparations we needed to make to carry out our EVA. Because we have only three working radio headsets, it was decided that we would dress and travel in teams of three.
We did personal projects until 11:00, when we met again to establish protocols and finalize our mission goals for today's EVA. This meeting was followed by lunch, then we went down to the EVA room to begin the afternoon's mission.
To familiarize ourselves with the equipment and procedures for putting on the analog space suits, we broke up into pairs and took turns dressing and undressing in the suits, following the checklist carefully. Luckily, Tim and Derek had gone through the equipment yesterday and had culled anything that wasn't working properly. This saved us a lot of time.
Finally, it was time for the first team, David, Jody, and Tim, to head out. Earlier, we had established a point they were to reach and establish a GPS reading, so after they exited the airlock, they set off for that point. They called the coordinates back to the Hab and alerted us that they were returning. After "repressurizing" in the airlock, they came in, and we all traded suits.
Once the second team was dressed, Kim, April, and Derek left the airlock to follow the GPS coordinates back to the same location. We celebrated upon our return with treats brought to the Hab by various crew members: Irish tea, Irish custard crème cookies, and Hershey's kisses.
Now that we are freed up from some of our repair tasks, we can embark on our science projects. Two EVAs, longer this time, are planned for tomorrow with Jody leading us on a geological mission.
Derek, who posts all our pictures to our crew page, posted pictures of us in the suits today; we couldn't resist the urge to photograph ourselves in sim. At last we feel as if we are at a Mars Station.
The cook team, Kim and David, prepared Thai Red Curry. Crew 15 dug in while discussing the day with enthusiasm. After a couple of hours or so of report-writing and huddling over Derek's pictures of the day, the crew settled down to watch one of David's favorite movies, Titus, a film based on the play Titus Andronicus by Shakespeare.
