Log Book for March 18, 2003
Crew Diary
April Childress Reporting

Today began with a breakfast of grits, scrambled eggs, and bagels; grits were a new item for several crewmembers, and they were pronounced good. David called a planning meeting, and the crew organized itself into official teams for cooking, general cleaning, showering, generator maintenance, and other and daily tasks. We are all ready to turn our attention away from the ongoing and seemingly never-ending organizing, sorting, and repairs that we have been immersed in so far.

But there were more of those sorts of tasks to do today, so the crew quickly went to work. David assessed various repairs that needed doing and contacted Robert Zubrin about them. They decided that the blue truck needed to be taken into Green River for new tires, a battery, and the like. David tapped me to make the trip into town with him. This involved pushing the truck into the vicinity of the recharger so that we could crank the vehicle.

Derek took over assessing the status of the EVA suits and spent the day in the EVA room sorting, counting, and repairing the equipment for use in an away mission tomorrow. Tim checked batteries and headsets, but we are missing a suitable recharger, so some batteries we have we can't use. Jody worked on maintenance and repairs around the Hab. I worked on securing the ladder to the back door of the Rover while Kim worked on getting her projects set up. Later Tim and Jody took the Rover to Hanksville for refueling; they also purchased topographic maps to replace ones that were missing from the Hab.

After lunch, David and I headed out to Hanksville. Once there, we found a shop to do the work; then I headed to the Laundromat. (If we're not in sim mode, we might as well be clean).

We all reconvened in time for Jody and me to cook supper, a vegetable fettuccini which was enjoyed at least in part by everyone, considering that Tim doesn't eat vegetables. Dinner conversation involved an animated discussion of Haiku and l. Kim contributed several, including, "No generator / frost on the silent desert / no Incinolet."

After the meal, we met to set priorities for the next day, including our first EVA. After the meeting, folks worked on their own projects until about 10:00 p.m., when Derek popped Galaxy Quest into his DVD player. By midnight, we were all pumped up for Wednesday's EVA.
