General Engineering Report
Derek O'Keeffe Reporting
Happy St. Patricks Day!
Generator/Electricity: Despite muddy conditions, the crew spent the morning moving the Generac from behind the Hab with an ATV, after which David used his truck to transport the unit to Grand Junction.
The gasoline generator was filled at 7am and again at 6pm (we are currently getting 11 hrs operating time out of the full tank). The oil was also topped up. This generator continues to be the main source of power for the Hab. The Everest Rover diesel generator is still being used to provide power to the fridge / freezer and the Hab PC.
David and Kim were not given a replacement generator in Grand Junction and the Generac is not likely to be fixed for at least a week, so we will have to continue with the current power strategy for the foreseeable future.
Water: Transferred 35 gallons at 8am this morning
GreenHab: The crew investigated the current status of the Greenhab today in conjunction with Mission Support. Unfortunately it appears that all the plants have died and its usefulness as a recycling facility is therefore redundant. Therefore we did not put the system back on line and on the advice of Mission Support we did not take any readings. Telescope: Nothing done with it at present - we will investigate it during our tour of duty.
Everest Rover: The Rover generator has been running all day, no problems.
Computers: The Habs printer was also debugged and fixed this afternoon and now all Crew XV laptops are online using both RJ45 and 80211b wireless to connect to the LAN and Internet. Don Fautz installed a laptop replacement for the main Hab pc yesterday to be the gateway to satellite link. The Hab PC is now used for general science work and both machines are running well.
Additional Activities: The ATVs were refuelled today with gasoline (as they were used to pull the Generac through the mud to the front of the Hab and to provide an escort to Davids truck and the trailer to the paved road, on the way to Grand Junction).
The hand gas pump leaks a lot from the rotating shaft and therefore a new one was purchased by David today in Grand Junction. Also the large (55 gal) drum of gasoline is almost empty and needs to be replaced. The crew also charged the battery of the Ford F350 and managed to crank it and drive it around for a while, however it would not start again later on in the day, so the battery is still not working properly.
