First Full Day at the Station
April Childress Reporting

By 7:00 a.m, the station was bustling with folks packing up to leave, with the two crews sharing out Cheerios and Buzz Blast cereal and last minute training. Each member of Crew 15 absorbed what we could, hoping to remember what we were hearing. Matt demonstrated the ATVs, Nishi discussed medical supplies, and Graham gave an overview of the generator problems, electrical issues, and the like. I spoke with a long time with Steve, who discussed the psychological research he'd been doing. And finally, Rocky took Jody and me to Hanksville in the Everest Rover to show us the methods for starting and driving the vehicle and to train us on dumping black and gray water and refilling the water tanks.

After the departing crew picked up Rocky in Hanksville, Jody and I set off back to the Hab in the Everest. Jody did most of the driving, but I got behind the wheel for a while, once on Cow Dung Road and on our way to the Hab. It's a marvelous truck, and I thought of all the military folks around the globe who were driving vehicles like this, bouncing along just as we were. After a few hundred yards, I handed the top-heavy unit back to Jody-he has a CDL-to drive through the "Rock Garden," a tricky tight spot. We lumbered back to the station feeling very much as if we were in an alien place.

We spent the rest of the day organizing, reorganizing, sorting and cleaning. Simply moving our mountain of groceries in was a huge task, and it involved reorganizing the kitchen. Some of the perishables we left downstairs in the cooler area of the Hab, but the Moon Pies and grits we stowed upstairs in the kitchen.

Those who weren't working on the organizing were settling into staterooms, finding and reading manuals, contacting Mission Support, writing reports, setting priorities for the next couple of days. We have decided that we cannot begin our own projects till we have the most problematic Hab systems up and running, or at least stabilized.

To summarize, the propane Generac generator is unusable, having caught fire a couple of days ago, so the Hab is running off a combination of the backup gas generator and the Rover's diesel generator. Power outages are not unusual, and the current backup generator cannot handle the systems of the Hab plus the power needs of the Incinolet toilet. So we have been using the portalets that had been rented by Crew 14 but haven't been picked up yet. We have been rather worried that they will be carted off before we have solved the waste disposal issue. In addition, the GreenHab has some problems and is not functioning correctly; also, there are small issues, like broken or lost supports for ladders and the like that will require minor work.

After a full day's work, we tucked into a supper that Jody served up, Teryaki chicken and rice, and then mostly worked on our own projects till bedtime.
