Log Book for March 7, 2003
Crew Diary
Jennifer Laing Reporting

Up at 6.00 a.m. - it's scary the number of sunrises I have seen on this Expedition - probably more than I have ever seen in my life ...

I was HabComm this morning for Nishi's run - had to communicate with her by radio as she jogged. Just time for a quick breakfast before joining the French film crew outside - they are coming along with us this morning to film Fathi, Rocky and Guy on the second EVA of their overnight Rover trip. Nishi, Steve and I ride with the crew in their van. Plenty of stops along the way to film the Everest Rover and we have to radio ahead to get the EVA crew to drive slowly past the camera. It's another beautiful morning, with a cloudless blue sky which puts the red craggy Mars-like rocks into sharp relief. The crew are in heaven, as are we.

We drive to Dry-Wall Canyon, where the crew suits up in the Mars-Skin suits, and film them examining the geological features. The smell of a dead sheep nearby somewhat ruins the mood - the support crew keeps getting whiffs of it as we run around taking photos and footage. An interesting discussion with the film crew about the gender balance of a crew to Mars and that old hot potato - sex in space.

The film crew switches to the Everest to film Fathi driving back to the Hab, so Guy and Rocky join us in the crew van. We are back just in time for lunch, although Fathi still has filming commitments. The crew films several exchanges with Fathi, answering questions about future Mars missions, as well as Steve suiting up in a MarsSkin. Graham does the commentary and I am in the background putting on an analog pressurised spacesuit, helped by Shannon.

I then start lunch dishes and dinner - life in the fast lane ... It's pasta again, with a chicken sauce and Stan has contributed a raspberry pie for dessert, which he and Nancy have converted into a crumble. The crew film people in the lab, and then head outside for a view of the Hab after dark.

Much hilarity over dinner discussing scary movies, and Jon provides entertainment for the ladies with the story of how he met his wife Anna!!

We farewell the French crew fondly and award them the 'special cup' for being so courteous and friendly. Am looking forward to seeing the finished product eventually.

We decide to go to Hanksville for dinner tomorrow night once we break sim - the last night for Phase 3. Hard to believe this will be my last night with the Expedition One crew, before flying back to Australia.
