EVA-36/38 Overnight Everest Rover Mission
Rocky Persaud Reporting

These two EVAs were an overnight Everest Rover mission, with Rocky Persaud of Canada, Fathi Karouia of France, and Guy Murphy of Australia. A chase vehicle followed the Everest with Steve Jordan (engineer), Jennifer Laing (PR Officer), Nishi Rawat (Medical Officer / Human Factors) in order to perform work analysis studies on the geologist / biologist team. This EVA was a catch-up from a missed EVA from Phase Two, so the focus of investigations was science operations as the EVA crew sought out sites, samples and measurements for the ExOne geology and biology porgram.

The Everest Rover was driven to Coal Mine Wash to study the microbial diversity of the area and measure paleocurrent directions. A visit to the scenic Salt Wash was the second and final stop for the EVA. Afterwards the rover crew returned to the hab to hook up for the night, since no power is available in the rover until the now fixed generator is delivered to MDRS.

After a chilly night in the rover, EVA 38 the next morning went to Drywall Canyon. After parking the rover close to the canyon wall, Guy, Fathi, and Rocky exited the rover in the MarsSkins, and climbed to the top of the box canyon up a moderately steep slope. On the rim more paleocurrent directions were measured by Rocky, while an evaluation of the software updated for the datalogger was performed by Fathi. Guy provided assistance as well as served as radio contact and safety ofificer for the EVA.
